A bedside table at night, lit by a small lamp: a glass of water, a green
clothbound book, and the small black player with a single blue light. No phone.

The trouble with meditating on your phone

Most of us listen to meditations on a phone. And phones are wonderful — but they’re also the most distracting object ever invented, and we keep them on the pillow beside us.

You open the app to wind down. On the way there you see a message you can’t unsee. The screen is bright. Something buzzes at 2am. You reach for it, and you’re awake again.

It’s not a failure of willpower. It’s just that the thing meant to settle you is living inside the thing designed to stir you up.

So I made something simpler.

A player that does one thing

It’s a small, plain player that sits on your bedside table. It doesn’t connect to the internet. It has no apps, no account, no updates and nothing to sign in to. It won’t ping you.

It arrives with a memory card already loaded and ready — you don’t have to download anything or set anything up. Take it out of the box, press play, and put it down.

You can leave your phone charging in another room, which is where it sleeps best anyway.

33 meditations. 6½ hours. All recorded for my books.

These aren’t new recordings made for this — they’re the studio versions from my published books, which are the best-quality recordings I’ve made:

They’re numbered in an order that makes sense at bedtime:

Tracks 1–8

Winding down

Short practices, 2 to 10 minutes, to settle the body when you first get into bed.

Tracks 9–16

Deep relaxation

Progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and four body scans from 11 to 32 minutes. These are the ones most people fall asleep to, and that’s entirely allowed — you don’t have to reach the end.

Tracks 17–20

Calming imagery

The lake, the mountain, the ocean. Quiet, spacious practices for a restless mind.

Tracks 21–33

Longer practices

Loving kindness, forgiveness, expanding awareness, and more — for nights when you’d like to go deeper, or for daytime if you fancy.

Six and a half hours means you can listen for weeks without hearing the same one twice.

Who it’s for

This might suit you if:

It’s probably not for you if you’re happy listening on your phone already, or you’d rather stream from a big library — in which case theDaily Mindfulness Club is a better fit, and cheaper.

How it works

  1. You order. One payment of £95.
  2. I post it to you. Loaded, tested and ready — typically within 3 working days.
  3. You press play. That’s genuinely the whole setup.

A word on the price

£95 isn’t nothing, and I want to be straight with you about what it covers: the player itself, the memory card, my time loading and checking each one by hand, the packaging, and posting it to you.

The meditations on it took years to make and were recorded properly in a studio. But the real value, I think, is what the object doesn’t do. It doesn’t want your attention. It isn’t trying to keep you up.

If that’s not worth it to you, please don’t buy it — I’d honestly rather you didn’t. And if money’s tight, everything here is available more cheaply elsewhere; justemail me and I’ll point you to it.

If it doesn’t help, send it back

Try it for 14 days. If it isn’t doing anything for you, post it back and I’ll refund you in full. You don’t need to explain yourself — a one-line email is plenty.

Questions

Do I need wifi or a phone?

No. Nothing to connect, nothing to download, no account to make. It works entirely on its own.

Do I need headphones?

No — it has its own speaker, so you can simply set it on the bedside table and listen. Nothing on your head, nothing to fall out in the night. If you share a bed and would rather listen privately, you can plug ordinary 3.5mm headphones into the side.

How long does the battery last?

About 15 hours of playback, so it’ll see you through many nights between charges. It charges by cable, which is included.

Can I put my own music or audiobooks on it?

Yes. The meditations live on a memory card you can swap or add to, and it also plays over Bluetooth if you ever want it to. Your meditations stay put.

What if I fall asleep before it finishes?

Then it’s working. You don’t need to hear the end, and nothing is lost.

Is this the same as the Daily Mindfulness Club?

No — the Club is a live daily meditation and an app. This is a standalone object with a fixed set of recordings, made for bedtime and made for people who’d rather not use an app.

Do you ship outside the UK?

At the moment I post within the UK only. If you’re overseas and would like one, do email me and I’ll see what’s possible.

Can I buy it as a gift?

Yes, and many people do. Email me after you order and I’ll include a handwritten card — just tell me what you’d like it to say.

Sleep is not something you can force

You can’t make yourself fall asleep. Trying harder is what keeps most of us awake.

What you can do is give your body somewhere kind to rest its attention while it lets go in its own time. That’s all these recordings are for — a voice to follow down, so your mind has something to do other than tomorrow.
